Family

When everyone needs something from you, where do you go when you need someone?

Why this question matters

Some people are the one who gets called. Children, parents, colleagues, the church rota. Being reliable is a gift, and it quietly becomes an identity.

The difficulty is not the work. It is that dependable people are rarely asked how they are doing, and often answer "fine" before they have checked.

You may be carrying

  • Decisions nobody else knows you are making
  • Care for an ageing parent alongside raising children
  • A schedule with no space in it for your own needs
  • Guilt whenever you rest

Consider this

  • List who depends on you. Then list who you can call at ten in the evening.
  • Notice whether "fine" is an answer or a habit.
  • Consider one responsibility that could be shared, even partly.

A question to sit with

Who carries you?

Scripture & reflection

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
Galatians 6:2 (KJV)

The instruction is mutual. Being carried is part of the arrangement, not an exception to it.

What others may be carrying

The same situation is lived differently by different people. In one conversation you might be sitting with:

  • Someone who would rather be needed than asked about
  • Someone with no family nearby at all
  • Someone who is relieved by responsibility because it gives the day shape
