Love & What's Next

What are the boundaries that protect what matters most to you?

Why this question matters

Boundaries are sometimes heard as coldness. In practice they are a description of how you can keep loving people over the long term.

Children, faith, work, rest and money all make claims on a week. Saying so early prevents a great deal of hurt later.

You may be carrying

  • Guilt whenever you say no
  • A pattern of finding out too late that something mattered to you
  • Family or church expectations that override your own
  • Difficulty explaining a limit without apologising for it

Consider this

  • Name three things in your life that are not negotiable, and why.
  • Practise saying one of them in a single plain sentence.
  • Notice how someone responds to a small boundary before testing a large one.

A question to sit with

What have you agreed to in the past that you would decline now?

What others may be carrying

The same situation is lived differently by different people. In one conversation you might be sitting with:

  • Someone whose boundaries were called selfish
  • Someone with none, and no idea where to start
  • Someone whose faith sets boundaries their friends do not share
